If you don’t know who this woman is, and you have been trying to lose weight or eat healthy, then you have been living under a rock. She has several ‘cookbooks’ out and now even has a ‘cooking’ show on the Food Network that both showcase her talent, or lack thereof depending on opinion, for throwing food together and calling it fast and healthy.
I really am conflicted about this woman. She seems to have a really cool personality and you can tell that she enjoys what she is doing, but her answer to the growing obesity problem in this country is just plain bad and unhealthy. That is not to say that she doesn’t have some good ideas because she does, but many of her recipes call for ingredients that have been created in labs and that are not good for you.
For example here is a recipe for ‘Banana Split Pie’ that she just cooked today on her Hungry Girl show on the Food Network:
One 60-calorie sugar-free chocolate pudding snack (like the kind by Jello-O)
2 cups Cool Whip Free, thawed
3 cups fat-free vanilla ice cream (like Bryers Smooth & Dreamy Fat free)
1 1/2 cups sliced strawberries
2 bananas, sliced
2 tbsp. Hershey’s Lite Chocolate Syrup
1 tbsp. crushed dry-roasted peanuts
8 maraschino cherries
Do I really have to explain what is wrong with this concoction? First off she uses two ingredients that are sugar-free, meaning that they contain some sort of artificial sweetener. Then she uses two fat-free products on top of that, both of which more than likely have added chemicals in them because the fat has been taken out. Why use such ingredients when you can use the real thing and eat the final product in moderation?
It’s not just the above recipe which is awful, the majority of her foods contain either non-fat products or artificial sweeteners. It has been proven time and time again that a low-fat diet doesn’t work and that those fake sugars have known carcinogens in them. Since that is the case you would think that people who cook would try to steer clear of them. Instead of being logical and trying to come up with recipes that contain actual food products, she perpetuates the use of such junk . She has said in interviews that people cannot eat completely healthy food all of the time, and I say hogwash to that! She may not be able to, but that doesn’t mean you or I can’t.
What’s even more scary than all of this is the alarming fact that a lot of people follow her and think that everything she says is gospel. Some of them even believe that those overly processed ingredients are good for you! No, eating food with chemical laden ingredients is not healthy and will not make you healthy. Eating healthy requires little effort and saying that it takes too long to cut up vegetables, or to prep a meal period, is ridiculous and being lazy. I work full-time, exercise for 40 minutes six times a week and manage to cook dinner.
When it comes down to it the idea behind Hungry Girl is nothing more than a fad that will run its course eventually like all things do. In the meantime people are eating it up literally, and becoming unhealthy in the process.
EDIT: I advertised this post on her Facebook wall and she took it down. Go figure. Denial is not a river in Egypt lady.
